One of the questions I receive often is “How do I start control bidding,
looking for slam, when my partner and I have found a major-suit fit at the
two-level?”. The simple answer is, suit bids below three of your major-suit fit are
natural, forcing, and showing distribution while suit bids past three of your
major-suit fit are control-showing cue bids promising first or second-round control.
That is an Ace, a King, or a singleton or void.
You cannot jump from the two-level to show an Ace or King. Any
single-level jump in a suit is a splinter bid after a fit has been found. Splinter bids
do show singletons or voids in the suit jumped to but never an Ace or a King.
We’ll leave Splinter bids for another day.
Let’s look at two hands to get a better idea of what I’m talking about.
