Large Cave

By Jim Cormier (All Pictures by Jim Cormier)

I am always on the lookout for items that I can use in my aquariums, I was looking in a product catalog and saw these reptile hiding caves. Of course I didn’t want them for reptiles but I thought they might make good breeding caves for my tropical fish. They come in four sizes and they are inexpensive, the largest under $10. I ordered one of each size. It took about a week for the order to arrive but I was impressed with how well they were made and how realistic they looked upon close inspection (look just like a rock).

These caves are the MEDIUM SIZE caves by EXO-Terra and Hagen.

When I put them in tanks they looked very natural and the fish took to them right away. The only thing that could be considered a negative is they had no bottom, but if you need caves with bottoms you can silicone a piece of slate to the bottom. They are made from a "food grade resin", whatever that is, but are almost unbreakable. This first group was made by EXO-Terra but while looking at one of my other pet supply catalogs, they had some that were made by Hagen and they look really good also. So I had to get some of them too. When the Hagen caves came in the first thing I noticed is that they looked like the EXO-Terra caves. When I compared them they were in fact the same. The same company in China makes them both. Overall they are a good addition to the aquarium, both functional, good looking and the price is right. If you have some cave dwellers or spawners then this might be your ticket!

This is the SMALL CAVE.
